Dr. Lance S. Estrada is double board-certified in both Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Estrada received his medical degree with highest honors from Tulane University School of Medicine and then completed his surgical training in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where he was elected Chief Resident in his final year and presented with the Leonard Marmor award for outstanding performance.
Following the completion of his surgical training, Dr. Estrada moved back to New Orleans and joined the private practice of Orthopaedic Associates of New Orleans (OANO) in 2004. He has been the team physician to the UNO Privateers basketball team, the Delta Festival Ballet, and the Country Day school athletic program. He has volunteered with the New Orleans Musician Clinic and currently volunteers with New Orleans Medical Mission Services (NOMMS), where he performs joint replacements in Central and South America.
Dr. Estrada specializes in joint replacements of the hip, knee, and shoulder. He performs the direct anterior approach for hip replacements which is muscle sparing and allows for better alignment of the implants and a faster recovery. He uses the MAKO Stryker Robotic system to do his primary knee replacements and has performed several thousand knee replacements in his career. He does both traditional as well as reverse total shoulder replacements. The reverse total shoulder replacement was FDA-approved in 2006 for patients who otherwise would not be able to have surgery, and he received the City Business award for being the first surgeon in the New Orleans area to perform this procedure.
Dr. Estrada also specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder. He has performed thousands of arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, labral repairs, and ACL reconstructions since entering practice. He continues to learn new techniques for reconstruction such as the superior capsular reconstruction for irreparable rotator cuff tears.
